How to Convert a Normal Cycle into an Electric Cycle (Using Voltebyk Kits)

Why buy a new electric cycle when you can convert your existing one? Step-by-step guide to electrifying your bicycle using Voltebyk conversion kits — tools, tips, and cost breakdown included.

Transform Any Bicycle into an Electric Cycle

You don't need to buy a brand-new electric cycle to enjoy electric-powered riding. If you already own a bicycle you love — whether it's a Hero, Firefox, Hercules, or any other brand — you can electrify it with a Voltebyk Conversion Kit for a fraction of the cost.

Why Convert Instead of Buying New?

What's in a Voltebyk Conversion Kit?

Every Voltebyk Conversion Kit includes:

  • 🔧 BLDC Hub Motor Wheel (350W, pre-built with spokes)
  • 🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (36V 7.5Ah or 10Ah options)
  • 🎛️ Controller Unit
  • 🖥️ LED/LCD Display Panel
  • 🏍️ Throttle Grip
  • ⚡ Charger (compatible with 5A socket)
  • 📦 All connectors, cables, zip ties, and mounting hardware
  • 📖 Installation manual + video guide link

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Step 1: Check Compatibility

Voltebyk kits are available for 26T, 27.5T, and 29T wheel sizes. Verify your bicycle's wheel size (printed on the tyre sidewall). Most Indian bicycles (Hero, Atlas, BSA, Firefox) use 26T.

Step 2: Remove the Rear Wheel

Flip your bicycle upside down (rest it on handlebars and seat). Remove the rear wheel using a 15mm wrench. Transfer the tyre, tube, and freewheel/cassette to the motor wheel.

Step 3: Install the Motor Wheel

Slide the motor wheel into the rear dropouts. The motor cable should exit on the non-drive side. Tighten the axle nuts firmly — this is critical for safety.

Step 4: Mount the Battery

Attach the battery bracket to your frame's bottle cage mounts (or use the provided clamp mount for frames without bottle cage bosses). Slide the battery onto the bracket until it clicks. Our battery packs are designed for secure, vibration-free mounting.

Step 5: Install the Controller

Secure the controller unit to the frame using zip ties or the provided velcro strap bag. Position it close to the battery for clean cable routing.

Step 6: Wire Everything Up

Connect the colour-coded connectors:

  • 🔴 Battery → Controller (power input)
  • 🔵 Motor → Controller (motor phase wires)
  • 🟢 Throttle → Controller
  • 🟡 Display → Controller

All connectors are keyed — they only fit the correct port. Use zip ties to secure cables away from wheels, chain, and brakes.

Step 7: Safety Check & Test Ride

  • ✅ Check brake function (both brakes)
  • ✅ Ensure motor wheel is tight and centred
  • ✅ Test throttle at low speed in an open area
  • ✅ Check all cable connections are secure
  • ✅ Ensure battery is locked on the bracket

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Using incompatible wheel size — always match 26T/27.5T/29T
  • ❌ Loose axle nuts — can cause wheel detachment at speed
  • ❌ Cables touching the chain or brake disc — causes damage
  • ❌ Overcharging the battery — unplug at 100%
